How to run a mad minute
- Print the worksheet and the answer key.
- Set a timer for one minute and say go.
- Stop at the buzzer. Circle the last problem finished. Not finishing is normal at first.
- Check with the key and write the number right on the score line.
- Do it again tomorrow with a fresh version of the same sheet. Keep the scores on a chart so the student can watch them climb.
- When the score hits 30 twice in a row, move to the next sheet.

The Mad Minute was a 1981 workbook by Paul Shoecraft and Terry Clukey: 30 basic facts, one minute a day, and a race against your own last score rather than against the class. The idea stuck, and a one-minute fact sheet has been called a mad minute, a math minute, or minute math ever since. This site takes its name from it. The Daily Challenge and the Custom Game are the same drill with the timer built in.
Keep it low-stakes
Speed drills work best after the facts have been taught, as short daily practice rather than a test. Some students freeze when a clock is running, so keep the score between you and the student, compare only against yesterday, and never grade it. If the timer itself is the problem, cover it or go untimed for the first week. The worksheet generator makes an untimed sheet of the same facts, and the game has a no-timer setting.
Which sheet first
Start with the operation the student is learning in class, at the easier range. Addition to 20 and subtraction from 20 are 1st and 2nd grade. Multiplication to 10 and the mixed addition and subtraction sheet are 3rd grade. Multiplication to 12, division, and the mixed sheets are 3rd through 5th. A score under 10 means the sheet is too hard for now.

Are timed math drills bad for kids?
Timed tests used as grades can cause anxiety, and they do not measure understanding, which is why teaching groups such as NCTM advise against them for assessment. As short, low-stakes practice after the facts have been taught, they build the speed that later math depends on. Keep the score private, compare only against yesterday, and go untimed if the clock is the problem.
What if my student cannot finish in a minute?
That is normal in the first week. Count the number right, not the number finished, and write it down. Most students add a few problems a week. If the score stays under 10, drop to an easier sheet for a while.
