When students move on to problems like 47 × 6, every step is a single fact written in column form. Practicing facts stacked like this makes that layout familiar, and it shows whether a student reads a problem correctly when one number sits above the other.
Answers with two or three digits, like 12 × 10 = 120, should be written with the ones digit under the ones. That habit matters later, when partial products have to line up by place value.
