Our Adding Mixed Numbers (Common Denominators) exercise is designed for 4th and 5th graders learning to add mixed numbers where the fraction parts already share a denominator.

How to Solve Fractions - Addition

Add the whole number parts together, then add the fraction parts together (keeping the common denominator). If the fraction sum is improper (numerator equals or exceeds the denominator), convert the excess to a whole number and add it to your whole number total. Simplify if needed.
