Printable 9 Times Table Flash Cards

The 9 times table has the most patterns of any family: for every fact up to 9 × 10 the answer's digits add to 9 and the tens digit is one less than the number being multiplied (9 × 7 = 63), and there is even a finger trick. These fold-over flashcards cover 9 × 1 through 9 × 12.

How to Use These Flash Cards

Teach the two-step pattern first — tens digit is one less, and the digits add to 9, so 9 × 7 is 6-something, and 6 + 3 = 9 gives 63. Then run the deck for speed, using the pattern only to check flips. The finger trick (fold down the seventh finger: six fingers left of it, three right — 63) makes a fun backup.

How to Cut and Fold

  1. Print the PDF single-sided on plain paper or light cardstock.
  2. Cut along the solid lines to separate the cards.
  3. Fold each card along the dashed center line so the answer sits behind the question, and turn the card over like a page to check.
  4. Optional: a dab of glue inside the fold makes a sturdy double-thick card.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the digit pattern in the 9 times table?

For 9 × 1 through 9 × 10, the answer's digits add to 9 and its tens digit is one less than the multiplier: 9 × 7 = 63 (6 is one less than 7, and 6 + 3 = 9). Two facts about every answer, for free.

How does the 9s finger trick work?

Hold up ten fingers and fold down the finger matching the multiplier. For 9 × 4, fold the fourth finger: 3 fingers stand to its left and 6 to its right — 36.

Is 9 times a number just 10 times minus the number?

Yes: 9 × n = 10n − n. So 9 × 8 is 80 − 8 = 72. It is the fastest mental route once a child is comfortable subtracting from round numbers.
