Exponents with Negative Bases
The Exponents with Negative Bases worksheet is an advanced challenge for 7th and 8th-grade students learning how powers affect signed numbers.
How to Solve Integers (Negatives)
Pay extremely close attention to parentheses! (-3)² means (-3) x (-3), which equals positive 9 because two negatives make a positive. However, -3² means the negative of 3², which is -9. An even exponent on a negative base inside parentheses results in a positive number, while an odd exponent results in a negative number.
