Place Value Practice

20 questions · 60 seconds · ones through thousands

Free · no login · instant feedback on every answer

Drill the idea underneath all of arithmetic: place value. Each question asks about the digits inside a number — what digit is in the hundreds place of 3,742, which digit holds the tens — with instant feedback on every answer.

Place value is why algorithms work: carrying, borrowing, multiplying by 10, decimal alignment, and rounding are all place-value moves. Students who can read a numeral as "3 thousands, 7 hundreds, 4 tens, 2 ones" at a glance have the mental model everything else plugs into.

Tips That Make It Stick

  • Say numbers the long way. Read 3,742 as "three thousand, seven hundred forty-two" — the words themselves name the place values.
  • Value = digit × place. The 7 in 3,742 is worth 7 × 100 = 700, not 7. Separating the digit from its value is the entire skill.
  • Watch the zero. In 4,058 the zero holds the hundreds place open. Zeros are not "nothing" — they are placeholders that keep every other digit honest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is place value?

The value a digit has because of its position: in 352, the 5 means 50 because it sits in the tens place. Our whole number system works by making position carry meaning.

Why is place value so important?

Every arithmetic algorithm — carrying, borrowing, long multiplication, decimal alignment — is a place-value procedure. Students with weak place value can follow steps but cannot tell when an answer is nonsense.

What grade learns place value?

Place value starts in 1st grade with tens and ones, reaches thousands by 3rd grade, and extends to decimals in 4th and 5th grade. This drill covers ones through thousands.
